Margot rested her elbows on the wicker rim, watching Bram test the burner. A three-second roar rose, encouraged a tumble of hotter air into the vast envelope, then vanished; silence wrapped the basket once more. Below, patchwork fields drifted by at walking pace, yet the basket felt utterly still. A kestrel hovered level with them, wings vibrating just enough to stay in place, then slipped sideways and shrank toward the river. Margot noted the bird’s steady poise, the faint sag of the rattan beneath her weight, and the steel cable that kept the rim square. She had counted on this sky-room for clear thought, and the view—sublime, unbroken—seemed to promise it.
A sketchbook lay open across her knees. She tried to trap the land’s geometry: hedgerows as lines, barns as dots, tractor paths as fading strokes. Each mark grew heavier than planned; rows wavered, vanishing into soft graphite smudges. She erased, redrew, and erased again. The basket floor kept creaking under the small shifts of her boots, a quiet reminder of altitude and of time moving on. Friction rose in her shoulders; the pencil paused above the page, then she lowered both hands, closed the book, and let it rest beside a folded wool blanket.
Lunch felt simpler. She knelt, unclipped the cooler, and lifted a stoneware casserole Bram’s mother had packed at dawn. The dish possessed its own heft; Margot’s forearms tightened, and the woven floor dipped a fraction, the plywood answering with a dull thunk. Condensation mottled the lid, warm scent of herbs slipping out at the seam. Setting the dish on the blanket, she noticed the square imprint it pressed into the rattan wall, each strand bending around the weight before springing back. That neat impression echoed the fields below: orderly, resilient, momentary. Her gaze flicked from basket to horizon and back again, a small loop she rode without thinking.
Bram poured water into tin cups and offered one. "Altitude nine hundred," he said, voice casual. Margot lifted the cup, but her eyes followed the casserole’s outline as it softened, the strands of rattan rebounding bit by bit. The pattern she had missed all morning—land as fabric, seams that breathe—rose clear as the burner’s flame had earlier. She reached for the sketchbook; her thumb touched the graphite tip, hovering just above the waiting paper.
Translation
