Pencil memory guided her grip, yet the blunt stylus glided differently, its tip eager to pivot when wax offered less friction than paper. Each fresh mark let a tiny ribbon of wax traverse the stylus shaft before falling with a nearly inaudible tap on the bench. When the drawing covered the plate, Marco carried it beyond the glass screen, and the workshop’s usual hush tightened beneath the hiss of acid biting copper. Ella leaned close to the barrier; the hiss mingled with a periodic drip, creating a rhythm that she counted beneath the sleeve. Breath held, she traced one printed feather without touching, then allowed her shoulders to drop; the slight silence after the press’s clang filled the room.
