June set her palm against the nearest cheese wheel, expecting chalk-dry firmness; instead, a cool film of moisture startled her fingers, and a fine scratch caught the pad of her thumb. The cellar breathed around her in near-silence, broken only by the distant drip that echoed off the vaulted stone ceiling, a ceiling that arched overhead like a quiet pavilion. Scented currents, half lactic, half mossy, drifted past each turn of her sleeve while the single bulb hummed above, its glow sliding over shelves where one spruce board sat oddly bare, the dust showing a perfect circle of absence.
Boot soles creaked on stone; Pierce joined her, his arrival registering first as a new rhythm in the hush. He raised an eyebrow toward the scratch, then tapped the rind; a hollow note answered, higher than its neighbour’s dense thud, and both of them paused. "Looks shallow," he said, words low enough not to disturb the hanging condensation. June brushed the surface bloom away in steady circles, the bristles leaving a hectic swirl of pale powder that settled onto the board. A faint bloom of azure mould appeared under the cleared arc, lining the scratch like paint inside a groove, and she hesitated, thumb hovering before the rind, unsure whether flaw or sign stood before her.
She tilted the wheel toward the bulb; the scratch aligned with the grid the board had pressed into the underside, revealing itself as the missing segment of a full pattern, not damage at all but a map of how the absent wheel above once rested here. Pierce exhaled and stepped back, letting the new resonance of the hollow rind fade into the room’s layered quiet. Somewhere up the stairwell, a door opened and closed, catching a pocket of warm air that rolled downward and thinned the cellar’s cool breath. June turned the wheel once more, brushed away the last scented dust, and pressed her palm against the now powder-dry rind.
Translation
