Cobble and the Tidal Weir Wall-

English Original
No whistle of wind reached the tidal flat when Ruby set the first stone against the weir’s outer curve.
Stillness pressed around her; only water dripping through hidden seams offered a pulse beneath the hush.
A wicker basket bulged beside her boots, already crammed with pebbles, shards of slate, and one stub of driftwood.
She wedged a flat basalt piece into a daylight crack, then packed smaller chips around it as though stuffing cloth into a suitcase.
Layer upon layer grew, the graceful arc thickening until the wall resembled a crowd huddled shoulder to shoulder.
Kane walked ahead, tapping each topstone with a wooden mallet, the dull notes marking which sections still rang hollow.
"Here." He handed Ruby a wedge-shaped chisel and kept moving, his outline bending with the curve like a slow compass arm.
Ruby used the tool to adjust a crooked block, yet habit drove her to slide more grey fragments into every tiny pocket.
Inside the enclosure, draining channels diverged, tracing branching paths through sand that glimmered like mercury under morning glare.
Seaweed, snails, and darting fry stirred inside the half-lit pools; the living mosaic tolerated the wall so long as a slight concession for flowing water remained.
Halfway along, Ruby noticed a bulge where her extras forced two heavy cobbles apart, the top line dipping like slack rope.
She paused, thumb resting on the chisel, and watched a bead of seawater slip through the widening seam.
Rather than add again, she levered the newest chip free; it clinked onto sand and a palm-sized crab burst from the gap.
The creature vanished along a draining rivulet, and the opened curve exhaled, stones settling with a gritty sigh.
One by one she removed surplus chips, then pressed a single smooth basalt block into the cleaned hollow until neighbouring cobbles clicked in agreement.
The tide continued its retreat, exposing crescents of fresh sand and turning her earliest footprints into shallow bowls.
She stepped back, palms powdered grey, and saw fewer stones yet a steadier silhouette running toward the heron perched at the far arm.
Discarded fragments rattled inside the basket; after a breath, she chose the palest cobble and flicked it toward the tide line.
It sailed over rippled channels, spun once, and brightness skimmed its wet skin while gravity decided where to set it down.
Translation
