Three polished hooks stood empty on the axle and the ratchet lay silent, its brass jaw glinting whenever he lifted it to catch Rafferty’s eye.

Rafferty settled the apron of combed manila against his hips, pinched a tuft, and walked backward. Zander’s first turn of the crank spun the hooks; a low creak rolled along the forming strand, and the ratchet clicked once. Rafferty offered the count aloud, letting the word carry across the shed for rhythm rather than record. Each step pulled fresh fibre from the apron, its mass tugging at his arms like damp laundry. At click twelve, slack puckered the nearest strand, so he slid extra hemp into the twist, narrowing his stride to keep tension. The slower pace, however, stretched the seconds between clicks, and Zander’s steady cadence now pressed forward, piling torque onto a line that had not caught up. The rope shivered, a faint vibration running into Rafferty's palms and making Zander pause mid-turn.

Instinct borrowed from evenings repairing fishing nets took over: Rafferty snapped his wrist, feeding a tight loop the way thin twine accepts a splice. The heavier hemp pushed back; the strand jerked hard enough to jar his forearms. A thin ribbon of unexpected colour slid from the apron—a lilac filament, softer and drier than the golden manila around it. That lighter thread refused the twist, ballooning out so the three-way braid refused to seat; the ratchet’s next click landed off tempo, its tone dipping an octave. Rafferty halted, shoulders braced against the rope’s pull, while a gnat drifted once between them and the clouded sun, the shed suddenly still enough to hear dust settle.

He lifted two fingers toward Zander, offering a plain sign for pause across the tawny light. Sliding one board nearer the frame, he let his knees share the steady load. Weight shifted, and the lilac filament tucked itself into place, leaving only a subtle spiral along the flank. The click count drifted from the plan, yet the rope lay even and warm beneath his palm. They worked the remaining metres in unhurried silence, each click settling like a pebble in water. When Rafferty reached the doorway again, the wrought iron latch he had nudged earlier carried a translucent smear of resin and the dusty print of his hand. The metal kept a whisper of the rope’s stored heat, warmth lingering like breath on glass.
