Rhea pressed a fingertip against a lone brass pin, feeling the metal’s night-chilled skin before warmth from her hand eased across it. The pin stood where a string once ran, a narrow corridor of silence surrounded by vibrating silver. Behind her, thyme brushed her ankles; ahead, the cedar wind harp waited, its frame already sun-warmed and faintly fragrant.
A breeze rose and slid through the remaining strings, releasing cascading whispers that settled first in her ribs, then in the air itself. The lowest strand droned, the highest flickered, yet a hollow beat lived between them, shaped by what was gone. Quinn shifted on the flat stone nearby, steam from his travel mug curling like a soothing ribbon through the cooler draft. “Still missing?” he asked. Rhea answered by lifting her palm and letting the chord lapse into quiet; the gap made its own reply.
She set a small brass chalice on the stone, half-filled with water scooped from a shaded pool farther down the slope. Sunlight struck the cup, and tremors from the next gust rippled its surface in tight rings, each ring an echo of notes the ear could not sort fast enough. Rhea hesitated, then chose to forge ahead: she stepped sideways out of the harp’s wind shadow, reopening the channel. The restored flow bent around her shoulders, and the instrument replied with a chord new to the hillside, as if absence itself had shifted key.
Rhea reached toward the space where no string lived, pinched the air beside the lonely pin, and dampened the nearest wire just enough to let overtones bloom without their usual anchor. The music reorganised; what began as a vacancy now framed a fragile counter-melody, thin but unmistakable. Quinn’s eyebrows lifted, yet he said nothing. Wind rolled across the valley once more, and Rhea held the empty pin between thumb and forefinger.
