English Original
Lily steadied the blunt pencil against her sketchbook, the page trembling as the basket drifted through a patch of sun-warmed air. Above her, the burner clicked, then exhaled a three-second roar that filled the envelope with orange light and a hollow metallic hum. When the noise died, a single church bell far below answered with a deeper note, rolling upward through the motionless air. The two sounds ignored each other, each keeping its own slow rhythm while Lily sketched the curve of the horizon. Her free hand rested on the steel-cored rim, reading the rattan’s warmth the way fingertips read running water.
Between burner bursts, a faint aroma of propane mingled with the sun-baked scent of rattan, colouring the silence without masking it. Lily had heard these layers on every flight, yet today a new trace unsettled the mix—a wisp of cinnamon drifting from Wyatt’s canvas backpack. Something clearly transpired on the ground: maybe breakfast spilt inside the pack, maybe nothing at all, yet the suspicion lingered in her nostrils. The envelope above, bulging like an inverted cauldron, breathed softly, its nylon panels taut then slack in slow pulses. Each time the panels tightened, the burner roared; each time the roar fell away, the bell below tolled another solitary note. Exhilaration, untethered and bright, hovered inside the hush between those calls, as if the sky itself inhaled and exhaled beside her. Lily lifted her pencil, waited, lowered it again—an odd stutter her sketch had never needed before.
Minutes passed, and the two rhythms crept toward each other like tides gaining ground. The bell paused at the same instant Wyatt squeezed the lever; the burner answered with its roar exactly when the bronze tongue struck again. Sound stacked upon sound, merging into one held note that climbed through her ribs and stilled her pencil in mid-arc. Her breath halted inside her throat, lining up with the sudden quiet that draped itself over basket, field, and distant village.
Before thought returned, her fingers pressed more firmly on the rattan rim, knuckles whitening until the woven strands creaked. The sketchbook dangled against her chest, forgotten for a heartbeat, then she lifted it and began tracing concentric rings that matched the coupled pulse overhead and below. Bell and burner separated again, yet the shape on the page refused to break apart, already welded by the collision she had heard rather than seen. Ahead, a farmhouse revealed its white facade through a gap in trees, the walls flashing once in sunlight like a held breath. She shaded the smallest ring darker, let the pencil rise, and touched the steel cable again, checking the new stillness of her pulse. Below the basket, the bell’s echo dissolved into fields that glimmered under drifting cloud shadow.
Translation
