Vance’s thumb and forefinger pinched the bone shuttle, sliding it through a loosened diamond before his eyes arranged the tangle; the wood skimmed salt-stiff thread, and a faint click rose inside the left post. He stilled. Sinkers along the hem had sagged, tugging a hidden lever that rocked a thin brass rod, the rod flashing amber where noon light slipped between knots. Thread yielded, weight dropped, rod pivoted—each motion answering the last. A silent clockwork had partnered with every repair he had made since spring, and only now did its choreography surface in the glare.
He pressed on, adding more: a new loop, then another, cinching with the flat gauge stick, lacing pale twine beside grey so encrusted that dust drifted in the beam. After each cluster he punched a fist gently into the web, listening for even stretch. Patch overlapped patch until the mesh looked armored rather than airy. Colette, perched on a bollard, watched the thickening tapestry and lifted an eyebrow. “Plenty strong,” she said, voice low, neither praise nor warning. Beyond the harbor wall, faint music hinted at shore-day revelry, yet the dock carried its own solitude, broken only by sinkers tapping stone. Vance answered the hush with more knots, chasing strength as though quantity itself were virtue, and the shuttle grew reluctant to pass through the crowded weave.
The tool snagged. He angled it, met resistance, and stopped, shoulders rigid. Deduction gathered: every extra strand pressed the hem downward, forcing that brass rod outward; lantern glass, cradled unseen inside the post, would rise only when the rod travelled back. The net’s weight muted its own light. He set the shuttle aside, slid two fresh rows free, and the slack twine puddled at his boots. A sigh from the mesh followed, and the rod tipped home. Within a narrow slot, a lantern lifted, wick already trimmed, spreading steady amber across the working space.
Colette fell silent; her eyes mirrored the new glow. Vance collected the loose twine, coiled it, and pressed his palm into the mended section just as he had earlier, this time slower, feeling the give instead of fighting it. The mesh flexed, returned, and held—a cleaner shape, lighter, enough. Lead beads rattled softly against stone while the lantern’s light settled across his knuckles.
Translation
