The workshop smelled of warmed pine shavings and sweet glue that clung in the still air. Early sunlight slid through the high window and struck a low shelf. Thin wax rectangles waited beside a clay mug of tea near the warm wall. Eamon stepped inside, his boots brushing a light procession of sawdust that crossed the floor like pale ants. A quiet terrier named Zeke trotted after him and settled near the wall. Steam developed above the dark tea, rising in lazy ribbons that curled toward the beams.
Eamon touched the first wax sheet and felt gentle warmth bleed into his fingertips. The edge bent softly, following the pressure of his thumb across its surface. He lifted it and placed it onto a tin tray beside the mug. He tried another wax piece that lay partly in shade near the chisels. This one stayed cool and rigid, offering an unexpected opportunity to compare textures. He stacked the cooler slice above the warmer, then added a third sheet from nearer the window. Eamon chuckled and said, "Looks like soft cheese today, right here, Zeke?" That layer almost began to melt, and a faint gloss achieved a mirror shine across its surface. Zeke’s ears flicked each time the wax clicked, and his nose quivered at the changing scents.
The growing tower leaned after the third addition; warmth at the bottom softened faster than layers above. A tiny tap of Zeke’s tail against the bench leg nudged the tray. The sheets then slid forward by a finger’s width and stopped near the rim. You find yourself watching slow motion when heat and gravity work together, and Eamon did exactly that. He pressed one palm near the sagging edge, yet stopped before fixing anything. The wax rested at a tilted angle, steam still drifting from the mug. Zeke stayed beside him, one paw lifted, while the stack held its uneasy balance.
Translation
