Every afternoon, Oswin lined the leather puppets along the backstage rack in the same careful order. The electric lamp hummed above him, its steady warmth pooling over his knuckles. Today that warmth carried a sharper edge, as though an invisible door had closed the space tighter. He shrugged, added a small paper swallow to the front row, then nudged a bamboo rod until the bird faced the cotton screen. A faint creak echoed through the wooden frame when the rod settled. Spare screws rattled inside a dented tin nearby, a just cause clatter swallowed by the lamp’s hum. Behind the screen, the first audience cough rippled, soft as steam against cloth.
Oswin kept adding shapes: a prancing horse, a moon-faced drummer, an entire garrison of cardboard soldiers. Their spears clicked in unison each time the rods crossed. The screen began to bloom with overlapping silhouettes, peaks of helmets sliding into the crescent of the horse’s back, every layer darkening the one beneath. Heat gathered under his sleeves, a damp warmth that stuck the leather to his wrist. He reached for another figure even after the edge of the rack trembled beneath the weight. The backstage offered a plethora of choices, and habit whispered that more always dazzled. Somewhere in that thickening forest of shadows, the swallow’s slim outline vanished.
A cough from the auditorium stretched longer, and Oswin froze mid-motion, the bamboo rods cooling suddenly where his fingers had sweated moments before. The tangled silhouettes on the screen no longer held allure; they blurred together like ink drops meeting water, the stories behind them smothered. He lowered the half-raised soldier, exhaled, then lifted instead the swallow he could barely find among the jumble. The bird’s joints squeaked, hopeful but stiff; his thumb warmed the hinge until the wings loosened. One by one, he returned the horse, the drummer, the garrison to the rack, each base clipping the shelf with a dry tap that thinned the backstage heat. At last the cotton glowed with a single crisp outline—small, bright, breathing.
Oswin eased the swallow closer to the screen, the bamboo rod balanced between thumb and first finger. The shadowbird expanded and contracted as he shifted distance, its edges sharp, then soft, then sharp again, breathing in light the way a real bird drinks wind. The auditorium fell silent, a waiting hush that settled like cool mist on the other side of the cloth. Behind the screen, the lamp still burned, yet the backstage no longer sweltered; space opened around his shoulders where heat had pressed. He closed his hand, letting the rod rest, and the lamp’s glow lay like calm embers on the cotton.
Translation
