English Original
Warren slid a narrow cedar lid across the bench, letting its edge click against a clay jar.
Each morning he checked the lids for tone, so his fingers lifted another piece and tapped its rim.
A bright ring answered and drifted toward the open door, then bounced once against the bare wall.
The tiny echo told him the wood stayed dry. He lined the lid beside an old kitchen spoon marked with flour stains.
Dust floated in a pale track of sun, and the smell of fresh shavings mixed with cool air.
Thin light pressed along the jar, showing hairline scratches that caught a faint silver shimmer.
Halfway through the stack, a low vibration crept along the floorboards and made the jar rattle.
The note of the next lid dropped by a full pitch, surprising Warren enough to pause mid-tap.
Warren murmured, "That ring slipped a note lower."
Moist afternoon air must have slipped inside, swelling the cedar; waiting for dryness would waste the entire day.
He steadied his breath and shifted his stance. He tapped again with lighter strokes, letting patience stretch the rhythm between knocks.
The pattern formed six soft beats. The spacing spelled patience is a virtue without any voice at all.
A moment later, the flour-stained spoon slid off the row, struck the jar, and clinked onto the floor.
Its topple echoed under the worktable, then settled into a quiet hum beside Warren’s boot.
He nudged it aside with his heel and kept the lids moving. He noted the slightly duller timbre that stayed inside each piece.
Warren wiped dust from his knuckles, and the jar remained tilted while the spoon rested on its bowl.
The workshop carried the slower pulse of new moisture.
Translation
