Alma lifted the questionnaire and let the shifting colors land on it. The paper shivered in the salt breeze, then reflected a pale green stripe back toward the ceiling. A warm scent of drying seaweed drifted in from outside, mixing with the faint oil smell of the lamp. Alma stepped upward, tilted the sheet again, and watched a sharper glare bounce into the stairwell corner. The thick brass frame frustrated the thin ray and threw a broken silhouette onto a dusty windowpane. Without a word, Harriet adjusted the lever once more. She did not announce any instruction, yet Alma noticed the lens now turned slower. Alma reached into her jacket and pulled out a faded ribbon she had kept from last month’s sports day. “Hold it steady,” Harriet said. Alma nodded and set the ribbon aside so she could mention her next idea with a grin. Light continued to crawl around the stairwell while the questionnaire and the ribbon lay side by side on the step.
