English Original
The single bulb above the attic hatch hummed and blinked twice. Its pale cone reached a slanted beam and left the corners in shadow. Poppy stepped onto the floorboards, knees bending, and pressed a small brush across the wood. Dust motes drifted around her wrist while a crisp smell of dry paper rested near the rafters. Beside the narrow window, Judson placed an old wooden chest on a scrap of woven mat, letting the mat grip the boards.
Poppy swept grit toward a tin dustpan. Each stroke scraped, and the bristles caught, then released again, leaving straight lines that ended in a neat pile. The rhythm gave the scene its own mechanical satisfaction, though crumbs kept sliding out from the rug fringe. At the same time, Judson leaned into the chest, and the mat creased. He pushed, the chest skidding a handspan before the weave snagged, folded, and stopped it. He exhaled and said, "The chest is heavier than I remember." Through the window, tiled roofs stood in a thin strip along the horizon.
Judson tried another shove; the folded mat jerked free, and a round tin lid hidden underneath shot forward. The lid skimmed the dusty floor, lost speed, and tapped Poppy’s dust pile. The impact sent a low ripple effect through the grey powder, spreading rings that broke her tidy edge. Grit rolled across the floorboards, and the tin lid spun in place until friction slowed it to a wobble. Poppy knelt, lifted the dustpan again, and started to carry the scattered dust back toward the center. Judson steadied the chest against the bare boards. The rings of powder stayed visible, and the chest lay in the same spot, its corners now etched with fresh streaks from the brief slide.
Translation
