English Original
Renn lowered a clear glass jar onto the sun-warmed platform plank, and grains of pale sand slid to one side. Light bent through the curved wall of the jar, throwing a narrow band of shifting color across the bench leg. A thin breeze lifted the timetable sheet nearby, yet the clock kept ticking on track above the door. Renn’s uncle Glen sat beside the jar and flicked a crumb of cracker onto the boards. "Look, a bird," he said, his voice low.
A brown sparrow hopped from the shade toward the bright patch, its head tilting left and right. The colored glare touched its feathers, and the bird paused while a long shadow from the awning crawled over the crumb. That shadow hid the food for a moment, and the sparrow tapped empty wood instead. Light reflecting from the jar then crossed the plank again; the glare marked the real crumb’s outline. The small beak struck true this time, and specks of cracker dust rose. A faint rainbow started to develop inside the jar as new sunlight entered at a steeper angle, and Renn watched the pattern with quick breaths. The jar formed part of a hands-on science project, though its weight felt more vital now than any lesson.
Glen broke another piece, larger than the first, and rested it near Renn’s shoe. The sparrow hopped closer, wings held low for balance. Wood fibers creaked under two sets of weight: the child’s shoe and the bird’s claws. When the sparrow finished, it sprang back into the stripe of shade. A small shoe print pressed beside twin rows of tiny claw marks remained on the dusty plank. Renn traced the outline of both marks with one finger, shifting a last grain of sand beside them.
Translation
