English Original
Three paces beyond the stairwell arch stood a wooden drying rack, its legs braced on pebbles. Nolan carried a tin bucket full of rinse water, while his daughter balanced a pinwheel made from stiff paper. A narrow clothesline crossed the roof and looped around a small bronze wheel fixed into the parapet. When Nolan tipped the bucket, a clear stream splashed into flower pots and left clay smelling fresh. He set the bucket down; a metal ladle floated inside, rotating slowly and glinting under noon light. Sky held no cloud, so heat rose, making the tar soften slightly beneath their shoes. A wisp of rosemary scent rose from the pots and tangled with warm dust that shimmered above the tiles.
Sylvie blew toward the pinwheel, and each blade began to spin, then wobble. She hooked her blue scarf over the clothesline, planning to slide it along the pulley. The scarf’s weight dragged, twisting the cotton line, and the bronze wheel refused to turn. Her small hand tried to clutch the stuck rim, but the groove bit into her fingers. Nolan dipped the ladle, then eased the round back of its bowl between wheel and frame, using the curved edge as a lever. The wheel pivoted with a short squeak, released the twist, and the line unwound. Sunlight caught the sudden movement and seemed to reveal tiny drops of sap that had glued the axle.
Free again, the scarf rolled across the gap and settled near the rack; the pinwheel twirled faster in the opened breeze. Nolan said, “All clear,” and stepped back, wiping his palm on his trousers. He lifted the bucket, and together they walked to the stairwell. After they vanished below, a rising gust spun grit around the parapet, scouring the damp clay. A broad cloud slid across the sun and the roof darkened under a cool gray film.
Translation
