Five steps from the heavy press, a low wooden table held shallow metal trays of type. The press plate stayed warm, and a faint haze drifted upward each time Ronan lifted the lever. Cal waited beside a stack of blank sheets. His palms rested against smooth maple that felt slightly cooler than the metal. Daylight from a high window struck the fresh ink, and reflections rippled over the dark letters. A sweet ink smell mixed with paper dust and brought a mild flavor onto Cal's tongue. Ronan glanced over and smiled. "Bright sheet coming," he said.
Cal slid the warm sheet onto a wooden board and felt gentle heat linger against his fingertips. Sunlight touched a small glass jar near the ink station, and pale liquid inside shimmered. He lifted the lid. Mint essence rose with thin threads of vapor that cooled quickly in the still air. The cooler air met the heated glass, and tiny droplets formed along the rim. Cal leaned closer, letting the sharp scent circle his nose. "Smells like garden leaves," he whispered. He dabbed one corner of the second sheet with the warmed liquid. The calm surface of ink shifted under the touch. A softer shine spread, and reflections bent, showing tiny waves where liquid and ink met.
A moment later, one cool bead slipped from the rim. It landed in the center of a third fresh sheet that rested on the press bed. The droplet spread into a faint circle, lifting pigment and leaving a pale halo. Cal fanned it with his sleeve, sending warm air across the spot. The mark stayed. He pressed the edge of a scrap blotting paper against the ring. The paper darkened, but the halo still showed. Cal set the blotting sheet aside, fingers lightly speckled with ink. The third sheet lay unchanged, its pale stain drying while his sleeve kept a new dark smear.
