The room smelled of cinnamon icing lingering from a cake cooling somewhere beyond the inner pantry. Marco stood inside the small wood-worker’s workshop, a thin shower of sawdust resting on his sleeves. He pressed a narrow strip of birch against a low wooden bench. The blade sliced a shallow groove, each careful chop steady and slow. Beside him lay a cloth bag filled with wooden dowels, paper circles, and a hand bellows. He planned to test how well the dowels would spin the circles. Fast air would push through them, almost like tiny pinwheels on a stick. Outside light slipped through the high window and caught the swirling dust. Cool air slid in with it, meeting warmer air inside and forming a faint draft across the bench. A folded sheet—his grocery list for tomorrow—waited under a chisel on the corner shelf. Its corners lifted gently whenever a fresh gust crept along the tabletop.

Marco gripped the wooden handles and squeezed the bellows against his knee. A firm puff darted under the first paper circle, and it fluttered upward with a quick whistle. He laughed and called over the noise, "Too much wind for this little circle!" The circle twirled twice, then drifted sideways, knocking the heavy chisel aside. Freed from that weight, the grocery list billowed upward and rode the moving air. It slapped against a stack of baking trays kept for mixing glue with flour. The sudden tug in the air also nudged an empty tin that once held cocoa. It clinked on the wooden shelf and settled again beside the brushes. Marco stretched across the bench, fingers open, reaching toward the fluttering paper. But it glided farther and slid under a low cabinet near the pantry door. He tried another squeeze to deflate the bellows and blow the paper back. The thin stream curved along the floorboards and quickly lost its force. Marco crouched with one arm stretched out, fingertips brushing the fine sawdust stripes. A single corner of the paper peeked from the dark gap and stayed.

Translation
