English Original
A soft crackle slipped across the frozen windowpane. Dale woke to that sound each cold morning. He shuffled toward the glass on stocking feet. Warm breath clouded the air around his chin, then faded against the glittering frost. He leaned closer. Irregular crystals covered the pane like tiny ferns. The room behind him stayed dim. Outside, light bounced off snowbanks and threw a pale glare onto the ice. Dale raised one finger and traced a small arc. The two delicate lines soon connected and shaped a narrow ridge like a distant mountain.
Sudden sunlight slid between the curtains and flooded the glass. The bright patch glared so strongly that Dale lost the ridge under shining specks. He blinked and cupped both hands around his drawing, trying to block the light. Still, the frost stayed brilliant. A footstep sounded behind him, and Celina paused at the doorway. "I nearly walked straight past that sparkle," she said. Her voice stayed low, and the sound seemed almost inside the window itself. Dale turned slightly. The motion shifted his shadow, and the ridge returned, darker against the light. This small shade was valuable, because it let the pattern stand out again.
He leaned closer once more and breathed on the lower corner. A clear hole opened, then thin fingers of ice crept inward again. Within seconds the new growth connected to the ridge and erased half the mountain shape. Dale chuckled under his breath. Outside, a chimney puffed steam, and its shadow crossed the window, laying fresh stripes over everything. He tapped the sill to mark the spot. Thin lines kept shifting under light, and he tried not to forget their path. Behind him, a person set a mug on the table. Its rising steam painted another blur on the glass. Dale kept one fingertip against the cooling pane. Patches of frost and glare stayed balanced in front of his eyes.
Translation
