“What is that pale dust by the bench?” Winter pointed at a small mound beside the iron leg. Flora knelt and brushed the top; the grains rolled away like tiny beads and left her fingertips dry.
The child tipped a cloth pouch from yesterday’s field trip over the wooden plank. Coarse salt trickled out, settled in a loose ribbon, and shone against the darker timber. A second pouch from an old classroom activity lay inside the same bag; this one carried rice dyed light blue. Winter let the rice fall beside the salt. Each landing grain gave a soft click, lighter than the first set. The platform boards answered with a hush of sawdust, left earlier by a carpenter, and Winter nudged that third powder into a thin curve around the other two lines.
A distant whistle cut through the still air; the platform trembled and the three strips shifted. Where salt and sawdust slid apart, a small paper label slipped into view, no words printed on its blank surface. Flora volunteered her ticket, sliding its edge under the paper to lift it clear, then set it back on the plank. Sunlight reached the new shape, and pale specks glimmered inside its outline. Flora tapped one more pinch of salt beside Winter’s final ridge of rice, the two of them completing a bright pattern that crossed the wooden board. The train rolled past, and the twin lines stayed bright against the dark plank.
