English Original
A single yellow work-lamp hung from a bent stand, throwing a narrow circle over the wing floor. Merritt leaned into a low wooden trolley and rolled it toward that circle. The trolley balanced a cardboard bunker painted moss green. At the same time, Harriet sat at a small table beside a rack of costumes. Her needle rose and fell in steady rhythm as she set each stitch through a brilliant turquoise cloak. Muffled gossip drifted from the dressing corridor and mixed with the soft bump of wheels.
Cool dust mixed with the faint smell of glue under the lamp’s heat. The floorboards felt slightly tacky under Merritt’s boots. He guided the trolley past a stack of paper rocks. Harriet stayed with her cloth, the cloak’s hem sliding across her lap in waves. Chairs from an earlier meeting still crowded the path. Merritt nudged one aside with his hip. The trolley gathered speed down a gentle slope he had not noticed. A loose thread trailed from the cloak, brushed the wheel, wrapped once, then again. The wheel locked. The trolley lurched. Its front edge knocked the sewing table. Harriet’s thimble rattled, her needle bounced, and the turquoise fabric jerked from her hands. Harriet let out a short laugh. "That startled me," she said.
Merritt planted both feet and stopped the trolley before it tipped. Harriet gripped the cloak, eyeing the fresh tension line where the thread had snapped. She clipped the fray and set a new knot. She returned the needle to the cloth, the pattern already changing direction. Merritt unwound the thread from the axle, then eased the trolley sideways around the chairs. The bunker panel rocked but stayed on its platform. Behind them, the work-lamp kept its narrow circle. The trolley’s wheels rolled again while the needle rose and fell.
