English Original
Dry lint clung to Ada's fingertips as she pressed the taut warp lines beside her.
A thin hum rose, steady yet higher than yesterday, sliding through the wooden frame. She wanted the shuttle to clap cleanly, without that strange pitch shifting underfoot. The cause hid somewhere between the beams, so Ada tapped each pedal in turn. One pedal answered with an uneven rattle that vibrated against the loom's side rail.
The rattle deepened whenever the left treadle dropped, suggesting a hidden object scraped the beam. Ada slid her hand beneath the frame and brushed a stiff cardboard folder lined with cloth samples. Each sample edge rasped against oak, producing a faint tick that mingled with the stronger buzz. She pulled the folder forward, but its corner snagged on a nail and refused to slide free. Wanda stood nearby, measuring yarn; she glanced over and murmured, "That sounds sharp today," offering no instruction. Ada nodded to acknowledge the comment, then pressed her thumb against the nail's cool shaft. The shaft bent slightly, enough for the folder to drop and land with a hollow thud. The loom's hum lowered, showing the strange pitch had grown from that odd wood-and-card configuration. She listened again, tracing the pattern of clicks like a timeline etched in shifting tones. Fairness of tension mattered, so she plucked several threads until their pitches aligned into gentle harmony.
She eased the folder onto the bench, careful not to scatter the frayed sample corners. Wanda flicked the shuttle once more; the loom answered with a balanced clack and a softer echo. They shared a brief grin, then silence settled except for the pedal's occasional creak under Ada's heel. Golden dust drifted through the high window and caught in the vibrating threads like tiny floating sparks. Across the room, old yard markers lay faded, marking earlier batches and hinting at seasons already woven. Ada listened while fabric slid over wood, its low murmur promising new tones as hours passed. She kept one foot on the pedal, and the stretched warp lines still hummed.
Translation
