Larkin stepped off the sandy path and over the low rock lip into the bright, salt-glossed shelf beside a tide pool. He lifted his palm to cut the glare, and the feathery anemone below cinched itself tight the instant his shadow crossed, a small mouth becoming a gathered fist as the surface smell of iodine rose.
His hand took the same angle it used under a desk lamp at home, a practiced visor he knew from sketching near a metal sconce. Warmth pressed into the heel of his palm from sunlit stone while coolness lay glass-flat an inch away, the boundary shrunk into a silver line. Beyond the basin, a wave slapped the outer ledge like an upbeat, and then quiet returned. A hermit crab tugged its borrowed shell along a ledge; each step clicked softly. Two periwinkles touched and paused, a slow parley of horns at the rim. A stranded kelp blade looped over a barnacle like a tiny pulley, its buoyant bladders lifting the free end whenever a thin ripple slid through.
He leaned lower, then checked himself; the refraction made the bottom appear nearer than it was, and the top layer ran warmer than the dimmer floor. “There,” Hollis said, crouching on dry rock, voice low and even. Larkin hovered a fingertip at the far edge and tapped once; rings traveled across the pool, and the anemone’s tentacles folded again before any shadow reached them. He stilled, then raised his hand higher so only a soft shade touched the surface. “Are you seeing this?” he said, keeping his breath off the water. On the outer shelf a cloud passed, and light cooled for a moment; the tentacles loosened by degrees, and the brine’s slow drift showed in the faint tilt of algae threads.
He shaped his palm into a curved shield, a living sconce that steered glare away without masking the anemone’s crown, and waited until the creature unfurled. Rock warmth spread into his skin; the pool kept its cool, silky hush. No shells moved; no pebbles left their hollows. The kelp’s loop still lay over its notch, the makeshift pulley merely resting against stone while its air sacs bobbed when a breath of swell reached in. The rim held a crust of salt like chalk, a pale ring that told of a wider bowl an hour ago. Out past the trench, the ocean gathered itself in flat sheets and climbed the black rock in shining ladders. The tide slid back into the basin and, beside the rim, Larkin set his warm palm flat on the dry stone.
Translation
