Story Content
English Original
A crisp snap traveled through the top ice as the crust broke under a first press. A clear metal ring answered from the front step where a jar touched the stone. Along the cedar fence, Esme packed a snowball on a flat board, palms steady inside damp, wool-lined gloves. Each squeeze made a high squeal that eased into a blunt crunch as the ball grew tight and round. Powder sifted through the glove seams, while packed snow felt gritty, heavy, and slightly sticky against her palms. One finished ball showed a faint, glassy skin near its surface, a thin band that looked like frozen sugar. Her breath hung as a pale cloud that seemed to hover just above the board before thinning into the cold. Behind her, June worked the shovel in a perseverant scrape along the drive, the noise rough as sand.
Esme rolled several more, setting them in a neat row that showed a small diversification of size and grain. She began a low ring near the board, palms quick, then slower when wet patches on her gloves turned stiff. At the step, June tapped the jar and said, "The candle waits here," while smoke thinned into the clear air. From the wall, the garden tap coughed twice, then spat a thin thread of water onto the step. Water crept under her board, slid along the grain, and she left the fence line to twist the handle tight. By the time she returned, the low sun had dropped behind the neighbour's tree and cooled one side of the ring. Two balls from deep powder had sagged where her hands had warmed them, their skin dry now and faintly cracked.
She touched the glassy-skinned ball again and found a firmer belt inside it, a hidden infrastructure that locked the grains. She chose the firm ones for the load, shifted a lighter piece upward, and let her mitten hover before pressing. Another crack showed on the cooler side, so she fitted a stout crust piece there and eased her weight into the curve. The ring lifted, wall thick in spots and thinner where warmth had thinned it, but the arch held under her gentle palm. June set her shovel aside, checked the wind, and said, "Tea-light is ready on the step, inside the jar." On the porch at the same time, a small flame woke inside the glass, and smoke folded back into the still air. Esme steadied her knees in the powder and pressed the last snowball into the rim’s damp cradle.
Translation
