"If a seam opens, the candle will flicker," his father said, the shovel paused halfway above the shining path. Max stepped back three paces; the dome kept its curve, though meltwater glimmered along several seams. He lifted a gloved hand, and his father raised the waiting candle jar for later. Shallow glove prints dimpled the repaired rim, and a thread of meltwater slid over them, twisting toward the cleared promenade.
