English Original
Metal scraped over the concrete promenade as Max's father moved the shovel beside the driveway. The path was being cleared by his father, each stroke piling snow near the garden tap. A sharp squeal replaced the scrape when Max firmly compressed a snowball on a wooden board. That first ring had been shaped from deep powder, yet its surface already sagged under its own weight. Max pressed harder, hoping to stabilize the curve, while his hibiscus-red scarf brushed his chin and crinkled softly. The tighter squeeze sent a second squeak slicing through the yard, fluttering snowdust upwards like dry sand. A sparrow on the cedar fence burst upward, wingbeats scattering needles across an overhanging branch. Startled, a grey squirrel dashed along the branch, shaking free a narrow crust of snow. The crust dropped onto Max's half-built dome, denting one side and rolling two balls toward the freshly cleared step.
He knelt, collected firmer surface snow near the fence, and pressed a new ball with slower, steady turns. The outer crust, warmed briefly by his palms, tightened as it cooled, letting him plug the dent with surprising ease. Yet minutes later another row, shaped again from deep powder, crumbled as hidden air pockets shifted inside the wall. Max changed his grip, holding each ball longer so warmth fused crystals before he placed them. "If a seam opens, the candle will flicker," his father said, the shovel paused halfway above the shining path. Max stepped back three paces; the dome kept its curve, though meltwater glimmered along several seams. He lifted a gloved hand, and his father raised the waiting candle jar for later. Shallow glove prints dimpled the repaired rim, and a thread of meltwater slid over them, twisting toward the cleared promenade.
Translation
