English Original

Three wide planks led to the middle of the footbridge, where Reese stopped. Zadie stood an arm’s length from the wooden rail, her paper set flat on its top. She opened her small watercolor tin and placed a plastic cup beside it. Her hand made the same short first stroke she always used to begin the scene. "Good spot," Reese said. "The light sits even across your page." Cool shade touched their sleeves, and a low rush from below mixed with the dry rasp of their sleeves on wood.

Zadie swirled her brush in the cup; water was the first ingredient in every color she mixed. She laid a soft blue line for the current. Then a rusty-brown ribbon of runoff seeped from the bank and crossed under the bridge, turning the water near the stones. Her wrist paused above the paper. "It’s turning warm near the bend," Reese said. Zadie held the brush over the cup. A quick hypothesis came: clay washed off the hill with the early rain. On the left bank, bees moved along white flowers to pollinate them, their bodies dusted yellow. A faint bubble rose below the rail and broke without a sound.

She worked on. She swirled in a touch of red and a hint of yellow, then thinned the mix. The wet center of the paper began to sag, and a clear bead pooled there. The bead crept toward her first line. She tilted the sheet a little, and the drop slid to the edge and dripped onto the bare rail. The new brown band joined her blue, and the two colors bled along the grain. She kept her belly behind the rail and let the brush move with the slow change. When the line reached the edge of the scene, she set the brush in the tin and snapped it shut. She lifted the damp page with both hands and slid it into a stiff folder.

Translation
