Story Content

English Original

Tweezers angled in her steady grip, Sylvie hovered over an escape wheel while the timing machine traced its quick, dotted path.

Sylvie asked, "Is the tick a shade higher today, under this lamp and loupe?"

She embarked on seating a ruby bearing into its brass cup; the felt cushioned the part, and her thumb read a faint, living push.

Mineral watch oil reached her palate as a light sweetness, and the tea by the lamp sent a syrupy stripe along her tongue.

Under the loupe the pallet fork rocked, its gate catching a tooth, releasing another, and the balance flashed like a coin on a string.

Inhale, hold, tweezers down, part seated, exhale—the small rhythm kept each wheel from drifting across the green felt.

In the parts tray, wheels no larger than seeds lay sorted by shape, so light a strong breath could tip one toward the felted lip.

The shop door bell chimed once, and a child's sneakers pattered across the front boards.

Sylvie lowered the dust cover over the open movement, set the tweezers flat, and stood, the loupe lifting the room into brief blur.

The child said, "Hello—my favorite ones are the small clocks in the case at the front."

"They’re by the glass," Sylvie answered, and her words rode a mingled taste of street salt and paper dust hovering near the doorway.

A pigeon on the ledge gave a soft, throaty note, then quiet settled as the door eased back against its spring.

When she came back to the bench, the tea had cooled enough to wear a skin, and the brass hood warmed only her finger backs.

She touched the jewel again and paused mid-press; the beat’s thin spacing recurred, yet its pitch hovered a half-step tighter in her ear.

Her hand left the bearing and reached for a screwdriver the size of a toothpick, the tip finding the regulator screw’s narrow slot.

She began a turn, stopped, then gave a quarter—the kind that trades a few seconds in a day—and the dotted trace steadied across the screen.

Street air brought a chalky dryness to her palate that had not lingered earlier, and she swallowed once to clear the aftertaste.

The timing machine’s drone thinned to a cleaner thread, the equal clicks writing their neat measure while the balance swung and returned.

She set the loupe on the felt and lifted the cup, tasting the spoon’s metal edge against cool tea before settling it back down.

Under magnification the same wheel flashed, and the light along its teeth cut brighter than earlier, so her hands found a tighter spacing.

On the coaster, the tea no longer steamed; tin-cool sweetness rested on her tongue while the dots kept their even distance.

Translation
