A sharp flash ran along the wall as the pane threw a bright reflection across it. “See that line?” she said, keeping her elbows close to the table edge.

Harris slid the parchment a little to one side. The soft glow shifted, and its edge crossed an old pencil mark with slow speed. Tara lowered the glass pane until the bright line touched the parchment. The paper showed two tones now, one pale and one almost white. A single corn kernel rolled inside the glass and stopped near the base. When he held the curved side in the light, the kernel’s dark shape jumped. It split into two small shadows on the parchment, side by side. “How did it do that?” Tara asked, leaning closer. Two thin bands of brightness stayed over the page, and the doubled dark shapes rested between them. Harris’s palm print fogged the glass for a moment, then cleared. Tara kept the jar tilted.
