English Original
The workshop smelled of pine dust and old linseed oil. A dry paper scent rose near the window.
Sunlight came through a tall pane and laid a bright square on the table. Thin marks cut across the wood, and a pale patch showed where years of light had faded the finish. Harris set a sheet of parchment in the square. The sheet felt smooth and a little warm, and the light behind it turned soft and milky. Tara lifted a spare glass pane from a frame and tilted it. A sharp flash ran along the wall as the pane threw a bright reflection across it. “See that line?” she said, keeping her elbows close to the table edge.
Harris slid the parchment a little to one side. The soft glow shifted, and its edge crossed an old pencil mark with slow speed. Tara lowered the glass pane until the bright line touched the parchment. The paper showed two tones now, one pale and one almost white. Camaraderie lived in their quiet, shared rhythm; four hands reached, set, and paused without fuss. Harris tapped a clear jar from the shelf. A single corn kernel rolled inside the glass and stopped near the base. When he held the curved side in the light, the kernel’s dark shape jumped. It split into two small shadows on the parchment, side by side. “How did it do that?” Tara asked, leaning closer. The jar’s round wall bent the light, and a pale yellow tint from old varnish on the window frame warmed the square on the table. Harris nudged the jar again, and the twin shadows traded places.
Two thin bands of brightness stayed over the page, and the doubled dark shapes rested between them. Harris’s palm print fogged the glass for a moment, then cleared. Tara kept the jar tilted.
Translation
