English Original
On the stair above, bright air and faint street clatter hung; below, Jude centered his weight on the cool stone and faced the long, wooden shelves.
His palms found familiar hollows on the first wheel, the rind’s dry bloom leaving a soft trace where his fingers braced for the turn.
The wooden stool waited near the middle row, its legs firm on the slight unevenness, and Jude’s ankles adjusted to keep a quiet, balanced stance.
"This shelf sits higher," Ronan said, voice low, his toes angled outward as if his body measured the reach.
Jude bowed slightly to bring his eyes level with the underside, then added a careful torque through his wrists to roll the weight toward him.
The board’s faint grid printed its regular symmetry into the rind, a shallow pattern resting where the wheel had pressed.
He tapped the edge with a knuckle; a dense, even thud answered, and his stance stayed planted over both feet.
They moved along the aisle in small shifts, the shuffle of their shoes keeping time with brush strokes and taps.
"Smell changes down there," Ronan said, tilting his chin toward the far wall while his shoulders stayed square to the shelf.
Jude breathed through his nose and felt his ribcage widen, peat and mushroom riding the cooler band of air that flowed the length of stone.
Midway, his reaching hand found only board: a pale, round ring cleaned by months of weight, its center bare where a wheel no longer sat.
His shoulders stopped above it; balance shifted, then settled again, the aisle’s rhythm pausing around that circle, and his knees eased without lifting his feet.
The spruce board carried a darker oval beyond the pale ring, a faint map of pauses and turns that his wrists echoed in their slow arc.
"New date at the slate," Ronan said quietly, his brush already moving in slow, circular passes on the next wheel.
Jude did not climb for chalk; his hips stayed square to the board, and his breath held a beat longer than before.
He shuffled the stool a half step farther and kept his hands near the empty ring, then drew the brush across the next wheel.
Turning resumed, but slower, the torque trimmed so the paste inside answered without strain; his spine made small corrections, his center hovering close to the shelf edge.
High near the ceiling gap, a faint shift ran the other way, and the cellar’s breath drifted toward the stairs while condensation kept its tiny lenses.
At the far end, he pressed a thumb into a rind that resisted with firm density, his wrist steadying until his nail left no mark.
He returned to the middle shelf, set his knuckles to a younger wheel, and let the tap land lighter than before, the sound small and exact.
Translation
