English Original

No second cup steamed on the shore boulder; beside the flag, an enamel mug cooled to the color of the sky.

Near the granite, a thin red strand lay under clear ice, encircled by tiny bubbles in orbital rings around a sand fleck.

Tamsin stepped from the packed snow onto the shore ice, knees soft, boots squeaking as shallow crystals pressed against their rubber edges.

Graeme stood on a lichen-crusted boulder with a bright flag tucked under his arm, watching the same pale mirror stretch toward the birches.

Frozen shore sludge formed a rucked collar at the waterline, brown and gray pressed into ripples the wind had left weeks ago.

The lake sang a slow note under Tamsin’s soles, the tone traveling up through the rubber before reaching her ears.

She crouched and set her gloved palm flat, wool meeting glassy cold, patience measured by the gradual chill seeping across her hand.

Snow grains scratched faintly as she brushed them aside, revealing the geometry of hairline cracks radiating from that single grain of sand.

Her mitten showed fresh darning, a dense oval above the thumb, and its stitched ridges picked up glitter from the scuffed crust.

The strand looked at first like a reed shaving, thin and stiff, until the light caught fuzz along the twist inside the ice.

She slid a mittened fingertip over it and paused when the wool snagged, the ice refusing to let even the smallest fiber rise.

Graeme shifted the flag to his other side and crouched near the boulder’s edge, breath a brief cloud that thinned in the clean air.

He said, “It’s shallow here,” and his eyes tracked the faint ripples of trapped water under the clearer pane just beyond her boots.

She pinched the wool above her thumb, then let it go, and reached into her pocket for the small tin that held needles.

Without opening it, she pressed the tin’s flat lid against the ice to make a little window, and the red glow deepened under her hand.

Not line, not reed; it was wool, a bright thread kinked where something had once rubbed, matching the spare scarf folded in the bag.

The enamel mug still sat unused beside Graeme’s boot, and the second pair of mittens stayed rolled tight under the boulder’s dry overhang.

Tamsin slid the tin back into her pocket, lifted only the loose fuzz at the end of the strand, and let the main length lie.

“Here,” she said, and passed the fleck of wool to Graeme, who tucked it into the cuff of his glove with a quick, neat nod.

A curl of birch bark had loosened above the waterline; she flicked it lightly from the peeling trunk and sent it skittering outward.

Still spinning, the thin curl crossed a patch of clear grey, tracing a slow arc over faint scratches and frozen bubbles that held their places.

Translation
