English Original
A metal bench chilled legs, a humming vending machine trembled tiles, and a scuffed glass barrier blocked wind. Helena spread a folded paper on the bench while Hartley sat beside her, headphones cupped over his ears. A pigeon hopped under their shoes, its nails ticking on concrete like small taps on glass. She traced the station route map behind scratched plastic, her finger sliding on the slick laminate. To hold her own orienteering map flat, she set a cold bottle on the curling corner. They had refrigerated the bottle that morning, so tiny drops already gathered and ran along its sides. A postcard with an idyllic forest photo lay under the map, its glossy edge peeking from the fold.
The pillar speaker crackled, and a voice named a different bay than the one on the display. Heads turned toward the platform board, and Helena stepped out of the shelter to read the orange numbers. A bus pulled in with a soft hiss, and warm air rushed around her shins and up her sleeves. She came back within moments, but the shelter felt warmer and the bottle was sweating into a silver puddle. Moisture crept under the paper, softening the corner until it sagged between the bench slats. The pigeon pecked once at the drip, then shook its neck feathers and stepped back from the damp spot.
Helena lifted the bottle, shook off the cold beads, and slipped it upright into her canvas backpack. She pressed the map against the glass barrier instead, the cool surface holding it flat without soaking it further. Hartley, back on the bench, lifted one ear cup and said, "Bay Four, seven minutes," before settling again. Helena compared the shelter map's smooth lines to her orienteering map's creased folds, sliding a finger along both edges. The idyllic lake photo peeked out again, now dappled with tiny dark dots where grit had stuck to moisture. She nodded at the board, rolled the map to a drier band, and tucked it under her arm. Under the bench, the damp corner left behind kept tightening, its curled tip slowly lifting from the tile.
Translation
