English Original
A low hum rolled from the vending machine beside the bench, matching the engine rhythm of buses outside. She shifted her weight onto the cold metal seat and bent forward to study the laminated route map. A milky layer of condensation blurred every coloured line and pooled at the panel’s lower edge. She pressed her palm flat against the plastic, hoping the warmth would clear a window through the misty film. Instead, water smeared sideways, and the writing turned even softer, like chalk rubbed once too many times. One quick squeeze of her sleeve against the corner left nothing but streaks that caught the strip light in dull loops. The mixture of warm shelter air and the cooler panel kept feeding fresh beads across the surface.
Sable’s older brother, Noel, lounged on the bench beside her, headphones on, foot tapping in sync with a muted drumbeat. He raised two fingers to show they had only five minutes, but the gesture did not put off her search. The panel had been secured by two small screws, yet both sat buried behind the fogged sheet where fingers could not reach. She leaned closer, and her warm breath clouded the top edge; drops gathered, slid downward, and dripped onto the aluminium frame. The new moisture seeped into the tiny gap between frame and panel, loosening the grip that earlier attempts had left tight.
Feeling the panel wobble, she hooked two fingers under the lip and gave a cautious tug; the sheet slid a finger’s width. A thin rivulet ran along the metal edge, turning the stubborn contact into a weak, slick line. She grabbed her used ticket, folded it, and pushed the stiff paper as a wedge to keep the opening from closing again. With tension easing inside the frame, cooler air rushed behind the plastic, clearing the fog in an uneven oval. Noel shifted his weight, the bench springs squealing, but he kept silent, leaving her quick hands to finish in time. Warm breath from the vending machine vents joined the draft, lifting a paper cup that twirled against her ankle. She was tracing the clear path toward platform three when the panel continued sliding a slow centimetre farther.
Translation
