Story Content
English Original
Vanilla from the old candle on the shelf slid across the carpet and mixed with dry, papery cardboard.
Cal set a cool marble on the bookshelf edge, while Adele sorted blocks by size near the supply pile. A glossy hardcover spine gave the first drop a slick start, and taped tubes carried speed through the straight section. A bright rectangle from the lamp lay warm on the book, and long shadows stretched under each block and tube. He let the marble go; it clacked, then turned sluggish where the middle tube flattened into a barely tilted zone. A soft lump in the carpet hid under the wooden support, pushing the height off by less than a finger. Cal scanned every joint, pressing along the tape until his thumb found a place that slid instead of holding. He braced the tube with his forearm, wrapped fresh tape tight, and smoothed each crease flat against the plastic. The run improved, yet the same section slowly relaxed again, turning the slope into a shallow shelf that drained speed. "One more run," Cal said, holding his breath as the marble rattled through the turn and paused at the sag.
His fingers met warmth at the joint; the tape felt softer, and the glossy cover came away slick under it. Heat from the lamp had loosened the grip, so the tube crept a few millimetres and leveled the drop. Dust along the tape edge showed older moves, a thin history pressed into the sticky rim like lines in dry clay. The cardboard ramp near the landing felt faintly damp, and a shallow dip had grown where wet marbles kept landing. Cal changed tools this time, folding a small rectangle of card, pinching a hard crease, and sliding it as a wedge. He tucked the wedge under the warm joint, then pressed the lamp switch until the cone clicked dark on the carpet. "Here we go," he said to the quiet room, and he set the marble down with two fingers and a short breath. The marble rolled clean through the middle this time, struck the hardcover spine, and clattered into the bowl on the rug. Cal stepped back, leaving the wedge to carry the load while the joint cooled and the glossy cover lost its slickness. In the dimmer patch, the warmed tape kept settling along the old crease, and its lifted corner inched downward on its own.
Translation
