Story Content
English Original
Dry grit pressed under Ives's palm as he slid paper.
He set a bowl and an exotic fruit beside it.
He raised his pencil for a small sketch of them.
His sleeve brushed grit, and a metal tin slid wide.
The tin bumped a short ruler near the bowl.
The ruler tipped and struck a jar of brushes.
The jar rocked, then tapped the plastic water cup.
The cup tipped and a cold drip hit paper.
A mild wood smell floated near the desk.
Grey lines blurred, and soft marks spread on the sketch.
The sliding tin kept moving and nudged a chalk box.
The box popped open and light sticks rolled out.
Two sticks hit the board clamp, and the board shifted.
The bowl slid a little, and the cup wobbled.
Water ran faster, and drops pattered over the edge.
"Oh no," Ives said, "I can fix this."
Ives pressed a towel flat and blocked the rolling sticks.
He slid the ruler back and steadied the jar.
He lifted the bowl and set it on center.
Along the desk leg, a thin bead of water crept.
Translation
Ives
