A half-open bud leans above the flower bed.
Warm sun is on the bud.
Halle stands on the warm back step.
Her toes press rough wood; peeling paint stays.
Pollen drifts.
The grandmother knits on the bench.
She says, "I like that color."
Halle looks at the bud.
A twig's small fork blocks her view.
She steps to the stone path.
A small puddle thins at the edge.
Sunlight dries the thin edge.
Damp earth smells rich near the fence.
Twigs creak.
A small puppy noses the gate gap.
It opens its mouth and yawns.
A pink tongue peeks through.
Halle's eyes widen, then blink.
The grandmother laughs softly.
She says, "Hello there, little friend."
Halle turns back to the flower bed.
The petal spreads a little more.
A seed pod on the branch splits.
It clicks once and widens.
