Story Content

English Original

Clara stepped onto the gravel ring that framed the sundial, her soles setting a measured cadence across the small stones.

She carried a wooden bobbin wound with thin cord, a slim twig, and a quiet habit of counting breaths into even measures.

Greta stood by the thyme bed, one hip resting on the low border, while the shadow grazed the dial’s softened hour lines.

"Good sun today," Greta said, her voice light as the breeze that moved the herb stalks in small, regular pulses.

Clara looped the cord around the gnomon’s base, drew it taut, and cut the gravel with the twig into a clean, concentric ring.

Pebbles slid back into place along the groove’s edges, and the circle kept its width as though nothing particular had happened.

She set her palm flat on the sunlit stone, lifted it, and studied the plate, which showed no mark and held its silent heat.

Another press left only a faint thrum in her fingers, the surface taking the contact evenly, with nothing for the eye to read.

She breathed to a steady count, unwound a little more cord, and scored a second circle whose distance matched the first all around.

Her count held a human tempo, less tidy than a conventional clock face, yet it kept the intervals steady enough for her tracing.

At the bird dish near the rosemary, a shallow ripple turned and settled, leaving fine sediment to ring the saucer in a pale band.

A bright patch dimmed as a small cloud crossed, the dial went blank, and Clara’s hand hovered above the plate without finishing its landing.

Sunlight returned; the shadow had shifted a finger’s width, and her first twig line showed a small misalignment against the edge it now crossed.

Clara pressed her palm down again, slower this time, and the pads of her fingers registered a stripe of cooler stone near the last hour mark.

She shifted the twig to that cooler course, shortened the cord by a knot on the bobbin, and dragged a lighter circle that tracked the new angle.

Then, all at once, a dark palm print bloomed, wet-edged against the stone plate.

Its outline spread irregularly along the warmer part and held fast across the cooler stripe her hand had just mapped with its slow pressure.

Greta leaned in, not touching, and released a small breath that lifted a sprig, while the gnomon’s thin line continued its patient, unseen drift.

"You marked it," Greta said, and her hands stayed open by her sides, the thyme leaves barely stirring in the steady air.

Clara took up the bobbin again, wound the dampened cord with habitual turns, each snug loop striking a quiet cadence against the one laid before.

Near the saucer, the pale band of sediment persisted, the water calm, while the new circle and the first line now diverged by a narrow measure.

The garden held its midday tempo, and the handprint darkened then lightened by degrees, as the shadow touched the next mark and kept traveling.

Translation
