English 原文
Marina balanced a box of model rockets against her hip while climbing the narrow stairwell to the community science-center roof. She had arrived as a volunteer for the evening star party, drawn by a lifelong penchant for curious gadgets that clicked, whirred, or made bodies gasp with delight. The organizers had cleared a square of old tiles at the edge and called it the launch pad, complete with yellow tape and a small battery igniter. Sunset streaked the clouds; warm orange spilled over roof vents, handrails, and Marina’s toolkit. Children’s voices drifted up from below, mixing with the buzz of portable telescopes rolling across the courtyard.
She knelt beside the igniter, lining three sleek cylinders in a neat row. A gust flipped an instruction sheet across the floor; Marina caught it with her boot, then laughed at the ragged choreography of spontaneity surrounding the preparations. The first rocket would rise after darkness thickened, but she wanted a test. She pressed the igniter switch; nothing happened. The fuse looked damp. She wiped it with the corner of her sleeve, pressed again, and still no spark. Tiles under her knees left pale dust on her jeans; behind her, the door clicked as another volunteer entered carrying cartons of glow sticks.
One more attempt: Marina leaned closer, thumb steady, wire trembling between contacts. A sudden pop answered, louder than expected. Instead of lifting, the rocket tipped sideways, skated off the launch pad, and began a wild ground-level sprint. The cylinder’s tail flame scorched a row of star charts, folding them into blackened curls. Cardboard constellations toppled; plastic cups shattered; a portable speaker clattered to the parapet. Marina lunged, but the rocket’s jerking path outpaced her reach and slammed into an empty water cooler, enough to destroy its thin shell with a dull crack. Vapor hissed, then hovered like fog above scattered debris.
The guest door swung wider; wide-eyed onlookers froze at the rooftop chaos that now glowed under deep violet sky. Marina unplugged the battery, then crouched among the ruins, breath quick and uneven. Somewhere inside the dark courtyard a cheer erupted, unaware of the mishap overhead. She lifted the crumpled star charts; singed edges flaked to the ground, exposing indigo paper under the soot. A half-melted glow stick slid from a carton and rolled until it rested between her shoes, still shining neon green. Ash settled over the quiet roof.
