English 原文

Nathan left the after-hours bus at the derelict freight yard because the walk between rusted wagons usually cleared the static in his mind. Cool air pressed against his cheeks, and small puddles along the gravel reflected pinpoints from distant streetlamps. He raised a battered flashlight; the beam cut a wobbling lane through drifting mist. A chain-link fence marked the official boundary of the yard, but several panels sagged outward, so he stepped through a gap without slowing. Weeds brushed his boots, releasing a sharp green scent; the freshness seemed capable of rejuvenating more than any café espresso. A faded scheduling board still clung to the control booth, its cracked plastic providing a theatrical backdrop and making the yard look like a silent stage left behind after the actors departed. Somewhere beyond the freight office, a sheet of tin clapped against its frame at intervals, adding percussion to the scene.

Nathan let the rail lines meander ahead of him, choosing the leftmost track simply because the gravel there looked drier. A pebble slid under his heel, making him sway before regaining balance. Midway along, the flashlight sputtered and went dark. He shook it hard; nothing. He rapped the casing against his palm once, twice; the bulb flickered, then steadied. The sudden return of light revealed a narrow service alley he had never noticed: corrugated walls on both sides, thick with posters for concerts long cancelled. At the far end, a solitary vending machine glowed ocean-blue. Its presence inside an abandoned yard made no sense, so he approached with slow, deliberate steps. The keypad still worked; the figure “12” showed a citrus drink. He dropped a coin. Metal cogs whirred, but instead of a can, the slot produced a sealed envelope no larger than a postcard.

He slit the envelope with a key. Inside lay a Polaroid image: himself, flashlight raised, captured from somewhere high above the yard. His shoulders tensed; he scanned the rooftops, but only mute windows stared back. A mechanical thunk echoed from the machine. Another envelope slid forward. The second photograph showed him lifting the first envelope. The pattern continued—flash, click, print—each picture catching a moment that had barely passed. Envelopes bumped against his boots, a paper tide growing deeper. He backed away until his shoulders touched the alley wall, then edged sideways, but the images kept arriving, mechanical patience ignoring his retreat. Nathan pressed the main switch; the screen blinked off, yet a fan inside kept turning. Silence gathered along the tracks, broken only by that steady, recycled hum. The solitary vending machine hummed beneath the torn awning.
