English 原文
Mira’s brief odyssey began the moment she stepped into Union Station. She balanced a narrow parcel against her shoulder, aimed for the art courier window before the clock hand reached eleven. A tide of commuters flowed around her; their rolling suitcases created a low percussion that echoed off glass panels. An announcement crackled overhead, then cut out midsyllable, leaving an inexplicable buzz that clung to the rafters. She angled toward the ticket concourse, where the departures board flashed, and noticed a cardboard tube identical to her own wedged beside a vending machine.
The tube’s owner jogged over at the same instant, and the synchronicity of their movements drew a curious glance from a passer-by. Mira’s fingers slipped on her parcel’s smooth cap; it thumped to the marble floor. When she crouched, the other tube toppled as well, rolling beneath a line barrier. A guard’s gaze drifted toward the disturbance, but the crowd’s rhythm absorbed the minor commotion before he reacted. Mira retrieved both cylinders, yet the weight difference between them felt debatable. A hiss rose from a ticket machine nearby—its tray jammed, scattering coins. Reflexively, half the queue shuffled sideways, opening an unexpected corridor toward the courier window.
Mira seized the gap, but another snag surfaced: the barcode on her parcel lay smudged, refusing the scanner’s beam. She exchanged the tubes, tried again, and the red light turned green. The immediate outcome revealed itself when the clerk slid the lid open; bright origami cranes spilled onto the counter instead of the charcoal sketches she expected. The stranger, now beside her, lifted the remaining tube and tipped out a rolled canvas—Mira’s delivery. No words were needed; they traded objects with relieved nods while the overhead clock clicked past the hour. A rush of footsteps slowed as the next train doors sealed, and the automatic gate paused, then lifted.
The small parcel rested on the counter beside a ticking clock.
