English 原文
Mateo balanced a sketchbook and a tin of pencils while moving up the gentle slope near the zoo’s tropical enclosure. Noon light bounced off glass panels and danced on a decorative pond. His eyes settled on an emerald iguana stretched along a sun-warmed branch inside the habitat, and he aimed to capture that still posture in graphite. A wooden bench angled toward the glass sat opposite a volcano-shaped fountain that ejected thin plumes of mist every ten minutes. Beyond the fence, a mural of a distant volcano curved across a retaining wall, the painted lava glowing crimson under hidden lights.
A recorded rumble drifted from a speaker beneath the mural, low enough to tickle the soles of passing shoes. Mateo lowered himself onto the bench, opened the book, and brushed eraser crumbs from an earlier page. The fountain’s timer clicked; water hissed through hidden pipes, and a tremor of sound rolled across the path. A few strollers paused, cameras rose, and the flow of visitors rearranged itself like slow water around a stone. Warm breeze tugged at a corner of his paper, so his fingers pinned it flat. The iguana remained motionless, eyelids half-lowered, its throat ballooning and shrinking with slow breaths; the pose offered a flawless subject for detailed drawing.
Halfway through the outline, the fountain erupted earlier than expected. A taller column of spray leapt from the volcano replica, releasing a hiss like escaping steam. The burst collided with a sudden gust, scattering droplets across the walkway and rustling palm leaves above. Umbrellas flicked open, children squealed, and a brief turmoil of wings pulsed through the aviary nets overhead. The movement jarred Mateo’s elbow, and his pencil slashed a dark line across the iguana’s tail. He let out a sharp breath, repositioned the page, and dabbed the mark with a corner of his sleeve, but commotion kept rolling along the row of enclosures. Behind a pane to his left, a stocky wolverine paced, heavy paws thudding against artificial tundra while its reflection slid over Mateo’s water-speckled shoes.
Mateo lifted the ruined sheet and turned to a fresh one, determined to salvage the scene. When his gaze returned to the branch, the supposed statue uncoiled; the iguana’s dewlap flashed orange, claws shifting on the bark as its head tilted toward the commotion. The unanticipated movement erased the silent certainty of his earlier strokes, yet it gifted the drawing a new spark of life. Mateo adjusted his grip, lowered the pencil, and traced the living curve anew while crowd flow eased into steadier patterns and droplets drained into the gutter. Steam hung above the fountain while Mateo's notebook rested against his knee.
