He wiped one key after another, letting brief notes bloom and fade among rolling suitcase wheels. Each twist of the tuning lever nudged pitches toward balance, yet entropy clawed back: a loose screw clattered onto the floor, a felt strip slipped sideways, and the cloth snagged on a hidden nail, ripping a narrow tear. Milo adjusted grip, replaced the screw, reseated the felt. When middle C finally rang clear, something unexpected stirred. A yellowed envelope slid from the gap behind the dampers and settled near the pedals. The concourse hushed for a heartbeat, commuters glancing over shoulders at the small, silent object.

Milo knelt. Ink smears on the envelope traced a fading street grid; inside lay a single pressed violet, brittle yet powerfully scented. No letter, no initials, nothing more. He balanced the flower on the music shelf, closed the envelope, and began a slow arpeggio that rippled through pillars and timetable boards. The piano's tone felt newly rounded, its earlier edge softened, as though wood and steel had absorbed the gentle weight of the violet.
