English 原文
Night drizzle peppered the roof of Westbridge Station, and Lionel hurried beneath the squeaking iron trusses. His suitcase wheels rattled over uneven tiles while he aimed to embark on the last coastal train. The main hall, built like a softened fortress of soot-dark bricks, funneled travelers toward intersecting corridors. At the center junction of platforms, warm air drifted from a small waiting room; benches, a humming radiator, and the faint aroma of coffee turned the glass enclosure into temporary sanctuary from the damp platforms outside.
Lionel paused under the departure board. Rows of flip-cards clattered, then stuttered through recursive degeneration: the same line of numbers reappeared, shed letters, and reappeared again, confusing the forming queue. He squinted, stepped closer, and misread the flickering code. Turning left instead of right, he pushed through a service door that resisted until a second shove released the latch. Hinges groaned, and the suitcase scraped paint from the frame. Beyond lay a narrow service passage, quiet and vaulted like the spine of an old rampart; echoes rolled ahead, and a maintenance trolley blocked part of the way. Lionel angled the suitcase sideways, nudged the trolley aside, and reached another exit that opened onto an unexpected platform.
A fresh gust carried whistles and rolling wheels from farther tracks, revealing his mistake: the coastal train waited on the opposite side. He pivoted, retraced hurried steps, and re-entered the main flow just as the crowd parted near the correct carriage. Metal doors slid apart; he lifted the suitcase over the gap and climbed aboard with a quick breath. Behind him, platform lights steadied, passengers settled into seats, and the departure board rested in steady silence.
