Milo placed his folding stool beside the pond before noon. He had planned a quick watercolor of the willow tree whose long branches brushed the water. The lush landscape around him had already appeared in several of his notebooks, yet this angle felt new. He has visited the park every weekend this spring. As he opened a fresh page, a sudden breeze rolled across the surface and flipped the sheet backward. His brush slipped and left a long green streak. While he searched for a rubber band, a pigeon landed on his paint box. It pecked hard at a bright red cake. The lid clicked shut under the bird’s weight, trapping his palette inside.

Milo reached to lift the lid, but the bird hopped away, and the box tipped over. The box was lifted again, now empty of paints. A small metal key rolled from the corner compartment, fell between roots, and disappeared. The unexpected object turned the quiet sketching session into a mystery. He anchored his pages with the rubber band, then knelt beside the willow roots. Muddy water hid the key, yet sunlight flashed on something silver. He slid a twig under the glimmer and lifted the key free. The rubber band acted like a silent savior, keeping the page steady while he added the final strokes. When his brush rested, the new painting showed calm water and spreading branches. One curious pigeon waited quietly near the bank.
