He reached for it, missed, and the spool bounced toward a painter balancing a wooden case. A commuter’s suitcase clipped the line, tightening it like a sudden tripwire before springing it forward. Jonas lifted the tile. Its underside formed a shallow cavity, an accidental bell. He placed the piece on the marble bench beside his recorder without comment. When the station clock reached noon, the first chime burst downward, struck the cavity, and resonance rolled along the beams with a new, low shimmer. Passers-by slowed, heads tilting as a richer tone filled the hall and drifted toward the distant gates. Jonas watched wave after wave of sound meet the steady hum of travellers; instead of drowning one another, they folded together, richer than either alone. He pressed stop on the recorder, wound the rescued cable, and left the tile where sunlight touched its glazed edge. A faint hum rested beneath the vaulted roof.
