English 原文
Maeve waited at the municipal archive reception while a gregarious clerk tapped a code into a panel. His rapid keystrokes echoed across the marble hall, then the security gate parted. Beyond it, sliding shelves lined a narrow aisle, each wheel painted with a number. Maeve’s notebook already held rigorous notes about a nineteenth-century trading firm; now she needed the firm’s final ledger to confirm a shipment date.
Inside the aisle, stale air pressed against her collar. She gripped the nearest wheel and turned. Metal groaned, yet the shelf refused to move. Dust fluttered around her wrist. She shifted her feet, tightened her grasp, and tried again. The mechanism jolted, clanked, and finally rolled aside. As the shelf slid, light from a ceiling tube struck a thin volume wedged behind larger bindings. Its spine showed frayed leather, and a small octopus sketch—almost a cephalopod in miniature—curled around the title.
Maeve pulled the volume free. The cover creaked, revealing columns of inked numbers. Midway through, faint lettering crossed beneath the visible script. She angled the page toward the brightness; older words surfaced like submerged ruins. The ledger was a palimpsest: beneath freight totals lay paragraphs in different hand, charting private expeditions beyond regular trade routes. One entry mentioned “unmapped reefs alive with spiral shells.” Maeve’s eyebrows lifted, and she flipped further. The hidden layer grew clearer where the clerk’s fluorescent bulb met the parchment, outlining weather observations, tide diagrams, and sketches of strange marine forms resembling lanterns drifting in deep water.
A soft thud sounded behind her. The shelf she had moved began to glide back along its track, nudged by another visitor turning a distant wheel. Folders swayed; loose papers rustled above. Maeve slid sideways, pressing the ledger to her chest, and pushed the shelf forward again. Its wheels squealed, halting midway and locking both units in place. The distant visitor muttered, then adjusted another handle; with a dull click, all shelves froze, leaving a workable gap in the aisle.
Maeve set the ledger on a reading table just outside the row. Pages lay open under the lamp; ink traces from two centuries touched the surface, and motes drifted through the beam. Around her, the stalled shelves rested in a neat stagger, and the overhead light hummed into a steady glow.
