Heron at the Canal Edge-

English 原文
Morning haze hung above the canal, turning roof tiles blurry and soft. On the narrow footbridge, Maurice balanced a slim sketchbook against the rail. The hour sat in a liminal pocket between night workers heading home and tourists still inside cafés. A tall heron stood on a half-submerged tire beside the opposite wall, neck folded like an origami hinge. Diesel aroma from distant engines mixed with the sweeter smell of pastry drifting from bakery vents. Maurice tapped charcoal against the paper, searching for an immediate contour before the bird shifted. A pedestrian paused to tie a shoelace, shaking the bridge boards; light ripples crossed the water in response. Nearby bicycles rattled over cobbles; puddles quivered under each passing wheel. He angled the pad to catch the pale sky’s reflection, believing the faint mirror might give sufficient contrast for clean lines.
A barge chugged toward the lock gates, its diesel cough reverberating under iron beams. The wake slapped against stone, splashing mud onto Maurice’s boots and pitching the heron’s perch. The bird lifted, hovered, then settled again after a single cautious glide. Wind tunneled through the footbridge lattice and flipped Maurice’s sketchbook; two fresh sheets tore along the wire binding, fluttered, and landed against damp planks. He crouched, pressing the pages flat, trying to reconcile the jagged edges with the ruined spiral. His knuckles darkened with wet charcoal, and drops of canal water spotted the margins like accidental punctuation. The heron’s reflection fractured inside widening rings; charcoal dust scattered over the wet grain. Behind him, the barge crew hauled a rope through rusted cleats, raising short metallic echoes that blended with distant church bells.
Before he could resume, the barge’s captain swung the tiller, and the stern nudged a floating crate caught under a rope. The crate jerked free, spinning toward the heron’s tire. Startled, the bird launched upward, leaving the tire unguarded. From beneath the rubber, a second heron unfolded—smaller, pale, almost silver—and claimed the spot without hesitation. Water slid from its wings in thin sheets, catching sunlight like flicked foil. Maurice blinked, then redrew his stance; the unexpected pair offered immediate contrast of stature. The first bird glided to a bollard closer to the bridge, making the composition wider and more layered than before. He ripped what remained of one damaged sheet, folded it for a fresh canvas, and sketched in brisk strokes. Ripples widened beneath the drifting feather.
