Milo balanced a white box while stepping from the bakery door. Several colourful balloons drifted above the street. Market stalls created a thriving buzz around him. He had planned extra time before his cousin’s party. He placed the cake on the passenger seat and started the engine. The late afternoon sun warmed the windshield while music clicked on the radio. Three blocks later, traffic jam formed beside the river bridge. Cars inched forward, stopped again, and filled the narrow lane. A bright ribbon was wrapped around the box, and sugary frosting shimmered under the glass roof.

The line of vehicles rolled forward, paused, then rolled again. A single traffic light ahead remained fixed on red, and horns echoed between buildings. Meanwhile the creamy surface inside the box tilted whenever Milo tapped the brake. Sweat gathered along his hairline; time slipped away. He has counted twenty slow minutes when the idea arrived. He pulled beside a bicycle rack and hurried along a shaded footpath. A cool wind stroked the lid, and the frosting regained shape. The community hall appeared at the corner, lights already glowing behind wide windows. Surprise waited inside; the guests still arranged ribbons because the host’s bus sat inside the same jam. The cake settled onto a long table, and the room steadied around its sweet scent.
