Clara Before the Midday Bell-

English 原文
Clara balanced a metal pot of vegetable stew against her hip while weaving through the courtyard of the old factory that the neighborhood had turned into a communal canteen. Under the canopy of striped cloth, folding tables stretched in rows, each already crowded with bread baskets, jars of pickles, and bowls of sliced fruit. The weekly feast relied on simple governance: whoever arrived first arranged tables, whoever cooked carried food, and whoever stayed late washed pots. No one inspected paperwork; transparency lived in plain sight through open lids and clear ladles. Clara’s participation began at dawn, chopping roots and herbs that promised sustenance for dozens of busy city hands. Now she aimed for an empty space near the center before the bronze bell above the doorway tolled noon, signalling that plates could finally clatter.
A wobble greeted her when she lowered the pot; one trestle leg rocked on uneven brick. She slid a flat stone under the wood, yet the lid still jittered. While she crouched, a stray cat brushed past, nudging a small paper packet from her apron pocket. It burst, scattering crimson chili flakes that sank through the surface of the pale broth. The stew darkened at once, sending a sharp aroma across the queue. Theo, passing with a tray of cups, raised an eyebrow; among the gentle–palate crowd, anyone who spiced the main dish often earned the teasing label of traitor. Clara stirred; flecks of red circled like sparks and settled. The first spoonful landed in a child’s bowl, then more bowls advanced, drawn by color and scent. Din mingled with laughter as the line curved farther across the yard, chairs scraped backward, and the courtyard rhythm steadied. Steam hovered above the steady trestle boards.
