Mila reached the quiet marina just after dawn, her camera swinging against her jacket. Thin mist curled over the lake, softening the outlines of every boat. She hoped to catch the first orange light from the water, rather than from land. A narrow wooden jetty led her past sleeping gulls toward a rowing boat she had reserved. The captain who rents boats on weekends is absent, yet a key rests on the seat.

Mila stepped back when a sharp gust shook the jetty and rattled the ropes. The key slid, tapped the planks, and dropped between boards. A passing motorboat left a wake that bumped the pier. The rope holding her vessel loosened, so the craft drifted half a meter away. She has handled cameras for years, yet pulling a moving hull felt completely new. Meanwhile, sunlight already striped the water, sliding away from her perfect angle.

Instead of waiting, Mila spotted a landing net that had been left by a fishing crew. She lifted it, hooked the drifting rope, and dragged the boat back to the jetty. A sudden meow sounded; a striped cat jumped onto the bench, scattering two gulls. The surprise made her laugh, and the sound echoed across the calm lake. Once the hull touched the posts, she climbed aboard. The cat settled by her shoes while gentle ripples slapped the side. Her shutter clicked, and ripples glittered under the growing light.
