Ben Before the Wheel Turned-

English 原文
Ben rolled his bicycle into the pale morning light, planning a quick ride to the riverside market. The back wheel sagged, and a quiet hiss touched his fingers when he pressed the valve. He had always relied on the pocket-sized pump clipped under the seat. Today its metal gauge stuck at zero, refusing to reveal any tire pressure. A ride that often began in seconds now paused before it had even started. Ben tapped the rubber sadly and wheeled the bike toward the garden shed for tools. Morning clouds drifted above the roof, yet warm sunlight still striped the driveway with pale gold.
Inside, cardboard boxes created an odd juxtaposition of camping gear beside dusty winter scarves. He dragged the pump free, shook it twice, and decided to give it a shot anyway. The handle moved, yet no air entered, only another flat hiss that echoed like a quiet warning. Next, he carried the wheel to his neighbour’s porch, where an electric compressor had been installed last spring. The power cord snagged behind a flower pot, and the motor refused to start when he pressed the button. If he had ignored the soft hiss, the postcard would still be hidden.
Confused, Ben spun the empty rim in his hands, and a corner of faded cardboard peeked from beneath the bead. He pried gently with an Allen key; the scrap unfolded into a postcard painted with bright boats on dark water. The small discovery brightened the ordinary repair, like sunlight flashing across a silver spoke. A single line of green ink crossed the image, an accidental tear that had trapped the valve open all morning. Air rushed in once the paper left, and the rubber walls rounded steadily under the restored flow. Ben turned the postcard over, noting a printed date from decades earlier, then slid it carefully into his pocket. The postcard rested on the workbench beside the fully inflated wheel.
