Harper carried a silver locket between tables at the crowded school fair. The small object, a treasured keepsake from Grandfather, clicked inside her pocket each time she hurried. She had hoped to reach the Memory Booth before the line closed, yet two forces slowed her stride. Long picnic tables filled the path, and vendors had pulled them too close together. A light rain began, leaving the wooden boards slippery. Despite the drizzle, bright music drifted over the tents, and steam from popcorn pans warmed her cheeks. She tried to squeeze sideways past a jar-painting stand. A striped feline darted under the benches and brushed her ankle.

The sudden touch made Harper jerk; the locket slipped, rolled, and landed near a drain. The cat, calm and enigmatic, settled beside the jewel as if guarding it. Guests pressed forward in a noisy line, so Harper changed strategy. Instead of bending in the crush, she unfolded a paper fan she had received earlier. She slid it flat along the wet boards, guiding the locket toward her boot. Minutes have vanished, yet the fan finally nudged the chain within reach. The Memory Booth camera was being packed away, but its flash remained powered. Harper offered the rescued locket, and the helper snapped one last picture. Light from fireworks glowed on the reopened locket resting in Harper's palm.
